GOP Strategist: Media Will "Eat" Rick Santorum

Sunday, 01 Jan 2012 05:36 PM

Rick Santorum may be rising in Iowa polls heading into the caucuses on Tuesday, but political watchers are predicting he's got a tough road ahead to become the true GOP front-runner.

For starters, GOP strategist Mike Murphy says he's had virtually no media scrutiny.

“The media works like Jurassic Park dinosaurs – 30 feet tall, huge teeth, not always the biggest brain, and it follows movement,” strategist Mike Murphy said on “Meet the Press” Sunday morning.

Santorum is moving, so the press will “stomp over there and eat Rick Santorum.”

The Des Moines Register's latest Iowa poll shows caucus members are taking a liking to the former Pennsylvannia senator. He's had a surge to third place, behind Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, the poll shows.

And Time Magazine's Mark Halperin predicted that if Santorum does well, the Romney machine will set their sights on him, as they've done with each candidate that rose to the top of the pack to challenge the former Massachusetts governor.

"Romney's very skilled opposition research team has killed the person who's challenged him,” Halperin said. “They killed Rick Perry. They killed Newt Gingrich. They haven’t lifted a finger to kill Rick Santorum.

Meanwhile, Santorum is alreay on the hot seat. He had to answer this weekend about his endorsement of Romney in 2008 (Romney was a better candidate “relative to John McCain,” he said.) and about his change of positions on abortion.

“Today I would support laws that would provide for (some) exceptions but I’m not for them,” Santorum answered.
