If Republicans’ resounding victory in the mid-term elections wasn’t enough to convince doubters that more and more Americans identify with the GOP, a new Gallup poll offers further proof. The survey shows that just 31 percent of Americans identified themselves as Democrats last year, the lowest level in 22 years and down from 36 percent a year ago, The Hill reports.

poll, americans, turn, gopThe portion of independents rose to 38 percent from 36 percent in 2009, and the Republican tally increased to 29 percent from 28 percent. While the Republican number remains below the Democratic one, clearly the GOP is picking up support from independents.

"The key to success in the 2012 elections may hinge on which party can win over the increasing number of independent voters," Gallup's Jeffrey Jones writes in a statement. "And it is quite possible that the pool of independents will expand in 2011, given that Gallup has seen an increase in the percentage of independents in each of the last five years after a midterm election."
