PETA Wants Vegan Vatican

The holier-than-cow letter sent Monday to Pope Benedict XVI by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals calling for a Vegan Vatican is in stark contrast to the animal rights group’s high-priced sexier-than-thou ad campaigns.

PETA vice president of policy and government affairs Bruce Friedrich, a Catholic who campaigned during college for the late abortion rights-supporter Sen. Paul Simon, told the Pontiff that “serving only vegan meals at the Vatican would help ensure a bright future for all.”

Friedrich also told the successor of St. Peter, “Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss this further.”

As chummy as Friedrich’s appeal may be, his advice to Benedict “to go vegan and only serve vegan meals in Vatican City and at all Papal events” may not go over too well with a Pope who at the Mass preceding the conclave that elected him in 2005 preached against mankind being “tossed from one extreme to the other: from Marxism to liberalism, to libertinism.”

PETA’s latest in a long series of celebrity shock nude advertisements is a giant billboard unveiled Dec. 15 across the street from the David Letterman Show’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, near Times Square in New York City.  The groundbreaking ad displays a completely nude photo of actress Bethenny Frankel, star of the Bravo cable channel’s “Real Housewives of New York City.”

And paired alongside the posting of its letter to the Pope on the PETA.org website is the steamy notice, “‘Havana Nights’ Star Promotes Safe Sex for Dogs and Cats.”

It begins, “He heated up the screen in the critically acclaimed – and sexually charged – film ‘Y Tu Mamá También,’ and he’s doing it again in the newly released ‘Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights.’  Mexican heartthrob Diego Luna is now touting the importance of safe sex – for dogs and cats …”  Luna says in the PETA campaign, “Animals need to have safe sex, too!”

The Pope would also undoubtedly take issue with PETA’s sidestepping of the abortion issue.  According to PETA.org, “just as the pro-life movement has no official position on animal rights, neither does the animal rights movement have an official position on abortion.”

Yet in June the organization publicly scolded pro-abortion President Obama for swatting and killing a fly during a TV interview.  At the time, Friedrich announced that PETA supports “brushing flies away rather than killing them” and the organization sent the White House a contraption that traps flies and releases them alive.

Yet PETA excuses the violence of the Animal Liberation Front: “The ALF, which is simply the name adopted by people who act illegally in behalf of animal rights, breaks inanimate objects such as stereotaxic devices and decapitators in order to save lives,” PETA argues on its website’s “General FAQs” page.

Pope Benedict might also be troubled about PETA’s JesusVeg.com website and the theological pronouncements it makes regarding Catholic doctrine.

“Since, according to Christian tradition, Jesus gave his life willingly, and there is certainly no additional suffering involved in receiving the Eucharist (communion),” the site declares, “to partake of it is not a violation of one’s vegetarianism.”

Regarding “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” JesusVeg.com says PETA is “calling on people to extend the commandment to animals” because “To take God’s desires seriously, we must all adopt a vegetarian diet.”

As well as claiming that “the evidence is convincing that the historical Jesus was a vegetarian,” the same PETA-sponsored website also makes pronouncements about Jewish theology, such as the matter-of-fact assertion that “kosher laws are so strict in order to discourage the consumption of animals.”
