HBO will debut Alexandra Pelosi’s documentary “Right America: Feeling Wronged” on Monday, Presidents Day.
Subtitled “Some Voices From the Campaign Trail,” the 44-minute documentary by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s daughter engages conservative followers of 2008 GOP candidate John McCain’s Straight Talk Express who see their hopes dashed in the wake of the Democratic victory.
The film’s flag-themed promotional poster depicts several campaign images above the tagline “Snapshots From the Divided States of America.”
Pelosi’s Web site states: “In 2008, I followed the McCain campaign across the country to listen to Americans who did not want Barack Obama to be their president. While not representative of the entire Republican Party, these are just some of the party faithful who turned out at campaign rallies along the way.”
In the film, when Sean Hannity of Fox News identifies the 39-year-old Pelosi as the Democratic House speaker’s daughter during a rally, she says Hannity is “going to get me killed,” according to a review in Hollywood trade paper Variety.
The left-leaning Variety adds that, “For Democrats, the viewing experience is akin to watching an opposing team's cheerleaders cry after losing the big game.”
Her previous film, “The Trials of Ted Haggard,” which details the downfall of the influential pastor, also is airing on HBO. It is a follow-up to “Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi,” which featured her travels and conversations with top evangelical leaders.
Pelosi spent a decade at NBC News. While covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign she used a handheld camcorder to create the documentary “Journeys with George,” which received six Emmy nominations.
A fierce media critic, Pelosi once told a gathering of NYU journalism students that the media is “the biggest problem that we have in America right now.” In that vein, she authored the 2005 book, “Sneaking into the Flying Circus: How the Media Turn Our Presidential Campaigns into Freak Shows,” in which she documents a “dysfunctional relationship” that includes “absurd hazing rituals” that candidates must endure.
A lifelong Democrat, Pelosi covered that party’s 2004 candidates for her HBO film “Diary of a Political Tourist.”
