The Obama administration is planning to implement a new tax on Christmas trees in order to fund a board to market and promote fresh-cut Christmas trees, reports
The Hill.
The proposed 15 cent per tree tax on mass producers of Christmas trees would fund the Christmas Tree Promotion Board
.
The board, originally suggested by Christmas tree producers and importers who fear competition from the growing use of artificial trees, would aim to market the benefits of buying a live, fresh-cut tree.
According to The Christmas Tree Checkoff Task Force agency that suggested the board, it is designed to be an “industry-funded promotion, research, and information program for fresh cut Christmas trees.”
The proposal, listed in the Nov. 8 Federal Register, would exempt producers and importers who produce or import under 500 Christmas trees annually.
