Obama Mulls Berlin Speech at Reagan Site

Monday, 07 July 2008 11:05 AM EDT

Barack Obama’s upcoming tour of Europe and the Middle East may include a speech at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate — the site of President Ronald Reagan’s famous “tear down this wall” speech.

The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s itinerary hasn’t been finalized, but the tour will include stops in France, Britain, Israel and Jordan, and an appearance in Berlin appears likely, according to Germany’s Spiegel Online.

An Obama staffer has already met with Berlin’s mayor, Klaus Wowereit, and the Secret Service has reportedly begun investigating security questions surrounding a visit by Obama.

The Berlin Senate has been asked whether Obama can deliver an address in front of the Brandenburg Gate, which stands beside the former site of the Berlin Wall.

On June 12, 1987, Reagan addressed then-Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev near the Gate and declared: “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
