Obama Leans Toward More Military Tribunals

Monday, 24 January 2011 01:06 PM EST

President Barack Obama finally is seeing the light when it comes to the suspected terrorists held Guantanamo Bay. With its plan to close the facility essentially off the table, the White House is moving toward the idea of trying detainees in military commissions at the island prison, officials and outside analysts tell Politico.

obama, gitmo, tribunals“When President Obama signed legislation this month that made it all but impossible to move Gitmo detainees to the U.S. for their trials, he issued a statement strongly objecting to those provisions. Yet, he also said he couldn’t veto the broader defense bill containing them because it might harm U.S. military efforts in Afghanistan and elsewhere,” the news service states.

“That bill, however, appears to have dashed the hopes of some administration insiders who wanted more detainees to stand trial in federal criminal courts.”
