With the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses fast approaching, newspapers across the state are lining up behind their favored presidential candidates — with Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee winning the most endorsements.
On the Democratic side, Obama has been endorsed by six newspapers — four dailies and two weeklies.
Hillary has won approval from four papers — three dailies and one weekly — but she has been endorsed by the most important newspaper in the state, the Des Moines Register.
Joe Biden has been endorsed by two weeklies, and John Edwards by one daily. No other Democratic candidate has received an endorsement.
Among GOP candidates, Huckabee is backed by six newspapers — two dailies and four weeklies. McCain is second with endorsements from five papers, four of them dailies — including the all-important Des Moines Register.
Mitt Romney has won the approval of one daily, and the other Republican candidates — including Rudy Giuliani — have not received an endorsement.
In its endorsement of Clinton, the Register opined that the job of president requires someone “who not only understands the changes needed to move the country forward but also possesses the discipline and skill to navigate the reality of the resistant Washington power structure to get things done. That candidate is New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.”
The Register states in its endorsement of McCain: “For all [the other candidates’] accomplishments on smaller stages, none can offer the tested leadership, in matters foreign and domestic, of Sen. John McCain of Arizona. McCain is most ready to lead America in a complex and dangerous world.”
