Democrat contender Sen. Barack Obama singles out former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as his favorite presidential candidate among the current GOP hopefuls.
"Is there a Republican in the field you admire, who you think might do a nice job?" Comedy Central host Jon Stewart asked Obama during his Wednesday night appearance on the program.
"I think some of these folks are decent people," Obama said. "I mean Mike Huckabee..."
Stewart then remarked, "Worst backhanded compliment ever!" - a remark that drew laughs.
"No, no, no," Obama insisted. "I think there are guys like Huckabee who I think are sincere and decent."
As Obama, who has positioned himself as the candidate to heal partisan division, continued his response, however, it became clear he didn't intend to let the GOP candidates off the hook.
"But if you look at how they were trying to outbid each other on Guantanamo: 'We're going to detain even more people and alienate even more folks outside our borders.' That kind of stuff I think is not serving the Republican party well, and isn't going to serve the country."
Obama also used his appearance to address questions about whether he has enough experience to be president, telling Stewart, "We trying to remind people nobody had a longer resume than Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, and that hasn't worked out so well."
