Obama Captures Crowd With Mention of Hillary

By    |   Monday, 14 July 2008 01:31 PM EDT

The crowd applauded heartily when Barack Obama gave a speech to the National Council of La Raza in San Diego on Sunday — but not for the reason Obama might have hoped.

Speaking to more than 2,000 members of the Hispanic civil rights organization, Obama criticized John McCain’s current stand on immigration reform. Then he talked about giving tax credits to small businesses that provide health insurance for employees, saying it is “an idea championed by my friend, Hillary Clinton.”

That’s when the crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause.

“But not over Obama’s policy proposal,” Andrew Malcolm writes on the Top of the Ticket blog at LATimes.com.

“What ignited that outburst was the mere mention by Obama of the name Hillary Clinton, his vanquished party opponent.”

Malcolm called the outburst “perhaps a reflection of that lingering unity thing.”
