Obama Reminds Backers of Clinton Vote

By    |   Friday, 12 October 2007 12:49 PM EDT

Barack Obama is using the fifth anniversary of the Senate Iraq war vote to take another not-so-subtle swipe at Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

“Five years ago today was a dark day for our party and for our country,” he writes in an email this week to supporters. “Too many Democrats followed the politics of the moment and voted to let George Bush invade Iraq.”

The email was sent to garner volunteers for a nationwide door-to-door anti-war canvass set for this weekend.

“Many Republicans and even a few Democrats refuse to admit the mistake they made five years ago,” Obama writes. “And now we’re seeing history repeat itself as the drumbeat builds for a war with Iran.

“Once again, some politicians are more afraid of appearing weak than they are of being dragged into another war.”

Obama on Thursday rapped Clinton’s vote last month in favor of a resolution declaring Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group. Speaking on CNN, he said the vote is helping give Bush yet another “blank check” to go to war.

Clinton’s vote in 2002 to authorize the war “speaks to her judgment and it speaks to my judgment,” Obama said. “It speaks to how we will make decisions going forward. I think her judgment was flawed on this issue.”
