President-elect Barack Obama is poised to reverse about 200 administration actions and executive orders implemented during the Bush administration.
According to The Washington Post, White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues could be undone soon after Obama takes office in January.
Dozens of Obama advisers have been working for months to identify and prioritize the issues, a transition official told the Post. Regulations imposed by President Bush for "overtly political" reasons are getting the most scrutiny, said Dan Mendelson, a former associate administrator for health in the Clinton administration's Office of Management and Budget.
However, nothing has been finalized yet, an Obama spokeswoman told the Post. "Before he makes any decisions on potential executive or legislative actions, he will be conferring with congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle, as well as interested groups," Obama transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said. "Any decisions would need to be discussed with his Cabinet nominees, none of whom have been selected yet."
Policies Obama is expected to reverse:
A limit on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. A rule barring international family-planning groups that receive U.S. aid from counseling women about the availability of abortion. The Bush administration's decision to deny California the authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles.
