U.S. News: Newsmax Is a Top 10 Winner in Healthcare Debate

By    |   Wednesday, 29 September 2010 03:03 PM

U.S. News & World Report ranks Newsmax among the “10 Winners in the Healthcare Debate” that shook America’s political system this past year. U.S. News’ top 10 included Newsmax among the “Right-Leaning News Websites” that benefited from the controversial law.

“The Drudge Report, Newsmax.com, and Fox News saw big surges in traffic as readers checked in for the latest on how Republicans were fighting the Democrats,” U.S News’ Paul Bedard writes in his must-read “Washington Whispers” report.

During the healthcare debate, Newsmax had been in the forefront of media criticism of the unpopular healthcare reform legislation the Democrats rammed through Congress.

Notable analysts such as Dick Morris, Ben Stein, Michael Reagan and others contributed to Newsmax coverage of the healthcare proposals.

Introducing the 10 Winners, Bedard writes: “The historic healthcare victory has made big winners out of the personalities involved.

“But there were a bunch of other winners, especially among interest groups, political campaign operations, and even news outlets.”

The winners were selected by a poll of “our insiders,” according to Bedard.

Other winners include Freedomworks, a tea party group headed by former Majority Leader Dick Armey; dark horse GOP candidates including Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour; the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; and the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Code Red campaign.

Newsmax.com has seen its Web traffic skyrocket to more than 4 million unique visitors a month, more than double what it was just two years ago.
And monthly circulation of Newsmax magazine also has more than doubled, soaring to 248,000 — up from 108,000 as recently as December 2009 — with an estimated monthly readership of 800,000.

Newsmax continues to rise as an online and multimedia publishing company and has earned praise from leading media professionals.

Former Yahoo! honcho Nathan Richardson, who has been called the “most influential person in online finance,” said Newsmax has “captured an audience that’s different than what everyone views as mainstream news sites.”

Steve Forbes, the Forbes Inc. CEO and editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, called Newsmax “a marketing powerhouse.”

And Talkers magazine publisher Michael Harrison said Newsmax is “a model others can follow who want both commercial success and influence on public policy.”
