Democrats are being dragged down so far by President Barack Obama’s unpopularity that promising young candidates are planning to skip the 2012 elections completely, according to party insiders.
One strategist admitted his advice is wait until at least 2014 before entering the fray, because he doesn’t want them to be put off politics for life by being heavily defeated next year, according to
The Hill.
“I’m warning my clients – ‘Don’t run in 2012.’ I don’t want to see good candidates lose by 12 to 15 points because of the president,” said the unidentified strategist.
The hole in which Democrats have found themselves was exemplified by Tuesday’s two Congressional elections, both easily won by Republicans.
The result in a heavily-Democratic New York seat was a particular blow.
David Weprin, a hand-picked candidate from a prominent Democratic family, with a solid record of public service was defeated by eight percentage points by Bob Turner, a 70-year-old former Jerry Springer Show producer who has never before held elective office.
Both the New York Post and the New York Daily News called the race in the seat previously held by scandal-plagued Rep. Anthony Weiner, a referendum on Obama’s policies, particularly on Israel.
In Nevada Mark Amodei beat Democrat Kate Marshall by 22 points in a seat which covers all of the state outside of Las Vegas and a few surrounding areas.
