Ex-Gen. Jones: Israel Can’t Be Partisan Issue

By    |   Tuesday, 08 February 2011 02:35 PM EST

Officials in both parties must work to ensure that support for Israel doesn’t turn into a partisan issue, says retired Gen. James Jones, President Barack Obama's former national security adviser. The concern is that both parties will distort Israel policy to score political advantage over the other in 2012 elections, The Hill reports

"I think that in matters of national security and international security, this is one that is major, perhaps the most major," Jones told reporters at a conference in Israel.

"We've had a bipartisan policy that belies the seriousness of this issue in such a way that it if it were to fall prey to partisan politics, it would be absurd," Jones added.

The relationship between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been strained, leading some Republicans and Democrats to charge that he’s not a friend of Israel.
