Muslim Congressman: OK to Show Dead bin Laden

By    |   Tuesday, 03 May 2011 05:44 PM EDT

A Muslim member of Congress, Rep. Andre Carson, D-Ind., says he has no problem with the White House releasing a gruesome image of Osama bin Laden’s corpse.

Carson told TheHill.com Tuesday that bin Laden “clearly posed a threat to global security.”

He added the administration has “a right” to publicize the photo.
The White House reportedly has been engaged in an internal debate over whether to release an image of bin Laden.

The photograph that most accurately reflects bin Laden’s likeness also shows a gory hole near each of his eyes, sources say. There are concerns the image could trigger a backlash on the Muslim street.
Several Muslim leaders have expressed disappointment that bin Laden was buried at sea, although there is no prohibition to the practice in Muslim law, experts say.

Carson told TheHill.com that the U.S. should send a “deeper message that we will not tolerate psychopathic leaders such as Osama bin Laden who push their religious extremism under the guise of a peaceful religion like Islam, and we will not tolerate people who jeopardize our global security, as well as lives of Americans.”

The other Muslim member of Congress, Keith Ellison, D-Minn., declined to comment when asked for his reaction to the photo’s possible release.
