Steele Flubs 'Favorite Book' Reference During Debate

Monday, 03 January 2011 08:52 PM EST

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele tells Newsmax that he was “just having fun” when he drew laughs and set the Twitter world a fire in response to a question about his favorite book during Monday’s debate between candidates to become the Republican National Committee’s next chairman.

At one point in the debate, Steele, clearly joking, said his favorite book was Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.”

As laughter began to die down, Steele then uttered, “The best of times and the worst of times,” a paraphrase of the opening lines of the Dickens classic, “A Tale of Two Cities.”

The audience again laughed, this time nervously over the apparent gaffe, which immediately hit the Twitter feeds.

“I was just having fun, I was just having fun, please,” Steele said when asked about the quote quip by Newsmax, “free association, that’s all. Tell the twitter community calm down.”
