Tech-Challenged McCain Grants a 'Twitterview'

Tuesday, 17 March 2009 01:12 PM EDT

John McCain was mocked during his failed presidential bid against Barack Obama for a supposed lack of tech-savvy but the Republican senator made a little bit of Web history of his own on Tuesday.

The 72-year-old McCain conducted what was billed as the first "Twitterview" -- an interview via micro-blogging service Twitter -- with ABC television political talk show host George Stephanopoulos.

McCain, whose messages on Twitter are followed by nearly 225,000 people at @senjohnmccain, replied to around 10 questions from @gstephanopoulos sent in the 140-character-or-less Twitter format.

Asked "What worries you more: Pakistan or Iran?" McCain replied: "Both. The challenges are different but both significant."

Asked whether he agreed with former US vice president Dick Cheney's claim that Obama was "putting (the) US at risk of new terror attack," McCain said it was "too early to draw that conclusion."

He was also asked about a spat between Meghan McCain and a radio talk show host who drew the ire of the Arizona senator's daughter by calling her "plus-sized."

"I'm proud of my daughter and she has a right to her opinions," McCain wrote. "Like any family we agree on some things and disagree on others."

McCain began using Twitter on January 23, three days after the inauguration of the man who defeated him in the November 4 presidential election in the most high-tech political campaign in US history.

McCain has sent more than 220 updates on the service since then, including a popular series of lists of the "top ten porkiest projects" inserted by members of congress into the economic stimulus bill.

"900,000 dollars for fish management - how does one manage a fish?" read one McCain "tweet."
