The failure of Congress earlier this month to pass a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill for next year has scared many liberals. They are worried that a Republican-controlled House will follow through on GOP budget cut promises for the American people,
The Hill reports.
David Dayen’s complaint on the liberal blog Firedoglake is typical. “The ‘stimulus’ from the tax cut deal is GONE,” he writes.
In the lame-duck session, Congress only passed a short-term measure to fund the government through March 4. That gives Republicans an opportunity to slash spending as soon as they take over the House next month.
To avoid a government shutdown, Congress will have to pass another continuing resolution or appropriations bills for the rest of 2011 by early March. Republicans plan to take advantage of their majority in the House to slash spending by $100 billion.
