Liberals Distrust Obama on Social Security

Tuesday, 04 January 2011 10:59 AM EST

It looks like President Barack Obama has a lot of work to do if he wants to regain the support of his party’s liberal wing. Leftists express concern that he will abandon their views on Social Security in exchange for support from Republicans in Congress on raising the debt ceiling, The Hill reports.

liberals, obama, social, securityThe worry intensified after Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., (pictured) told NBC Sunday, “I will not vote for the debt ceiling increase until I see a plan in place that will deal with our long-term debt obligation starting with Social Security, a real bipartisan effort to make sure that Social Security stays solvent, adjusting the age, looking at means test for benefits.”

Those are actually quite moderate views. But they prompted Nancy Altman, the co-director of Social Security Works, to tell The Hill, “What I am really afraid of is another deal behind closed doors. At least with President Bush, he went around the country on a tour and presented his plan, and people didn’t like it.”
