Iowa Poll: Thompson Second Now

Former Sen. Fred Thompson has soared into contention in Iowa, according to the Des Moines Register.

In the newspaper's latest Iowa Poll, Mitt Romney still leads all Republican presidential candidates, but Thompson has zoomed into second place, followed by Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani.

In the poll:

Romney is the presidential choice of 29 percent of those who say they definitely or probably will attend the leadoff caucuses.

Thompson is at 18 percent.

Huckabee is at 12 percent.

Giuliani is at 11 percent.

Sen. John McCain is at 7 percent.

Rep. Tom Tancredo is at 5 percent.

Rep. Ron Paul is at 4 percent.

Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and Alan Keyes are tied at 2.

Rep. Duncan Hunter is at 1 percent.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
