Illegal aliens are getting identification cards and driver’s licenses in several places around the country, leading some immigration experts to charge that local governments may be violating the law.
New Haven, Conn., began issuing municipal ID cards in July to all residents, including illegal aliens. The cards can be used to open a bank account, and as a debit card at some stores. There are as many as 15,000 illegal immigrants in New Haven, according to USA Today.
New York will join eight other states in giving driver’s licenses to illegals, beginning in December. The licenses will enable illegal immigrants “to participate in the economy,” said Motor Vehicles Commissioner David Swarts.
But Oklahoma state Rep. Randy Terrill, who authored a new law that bars illegal immigrants from receiving a government ID, said: “There are huge security concerns when it comes to somebody who is a foreign national in this country possessing official government-issued” identification.
And Tom Fitton, president of the conservative Judicial Watch, told USA Today in regard to local governments that distribute the cards: “In the last, they undermine federal law, and at worst, they violate the law.”
