Cancellations Fuel Gore Peace Prize Speculation

By    |   Thursday, 11 October 2007 02:28 PM EDT

Sen. Barbara Boxer's office says that former Vice President Al Gore has been called "overseas" for a trip related to his work on global warming and has canceled his scheduled appearance Thursday in San Francisco at a fundraiser for Boxer's re-election effort, notes the Politics Blog of SFGate.com. Coming on the eve of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, speculation is now wide that the call has to do with Gore getting tapped for the Nobel Peace Prize.

According to the blog, which has now been repeated by Fox News, Boxer sent supporters the following missive:

“I just got a call from Vice President Al Gore. He told me that he needs to travel abroad tomorrow for an exciting and urgent mission that could result in a major breakthrough in the fight against global warming. Unfortunately, this means that we must postpone our Thursday, October 11th event with him until Friday, November 9th. I wanted to be sure to e-mail you tonight in case you were planning on attending.”

“You should know that only the most urgent global warming mission has called him out of the country,” Boxer added.

According to a Fox News report, Gore also cancelled a meeting on the climate crisis in Asia.

Kalee Kreider, a Gore spokeswoman, told FOXNews.com that the climate meeting was cancelled early Thursday morning, but did not give a reason why.

Fox also reported that Kreider said Friday is expected to be a normal one for Gore:

"He is resuming his schedule in California, including a meeting on Friday with the Alliance of Climate Protection. Friday will be a normal, long business day."

Gore was nominated in February for the Peace Prize for his efforts to draw the world's attention to the dangers of global warming, which he did through his Academy Award winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth."
