Likely GOP Candidates Pan Obama Budget Plan

Thursday, 14 April 2011 07:19 AM EDT

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Republicans who hope to run against President Barack Obama next year are panning his budget proposal, calling it another example of his inability to lead.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney calls Obama's plan "too little, too late."

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty says Obama's speech Wednesday was "nothing more than window dressing."

Obama's budget proposal would cut the federal deficit by $4 trillion over 12 years by eliminating health care fraud, paring defense spending and raising taxes on the wealthy.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour targeted that last element, saying the "fear of higher taxes tomorrow hurts job creation today."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says Obama's plan "will hurt seniors, kill jobs, raise gas prices and increase our crushing debt."
