Ellmers: Defund Obamacare After Midterms

By    |   Monday, 02 August 2010 08:28 PM

Republican congressional candidate Renee Ellmers, a nurse whose husband is a surgeon, tells Newsmax that the Democrats’ healthcare reform bill will be “devastating” to the economy and she vows to fight to defund and repeal it if elected.

Ellmers, who is running for the seat from North Carolina’s 2nd District, also says Washington and her Democratic opponent Bob Etheridge are “out of control” when it comes to spending.

Etheridge, who was first elected in 1996, was videotaped in June in a confrontation with two young people who identified themselves as students and asked if Etheridge supports Barack Obama’s agenda. Etheridge grabbed one of the two by the wrist, neck and the back of his shirt while repeatedly asking who the pair represented.

The congressman later apologized, but a poll taken shortly after the video became public found him in a statistical dead heat with Ellmers.
In an exclusive Newsmax interview, she was asked about her strategy going forward in the campaign.

“Basically what we’re doing is pointing out to people of District Two, who are very good conservative, hard-working people, that the person that Congressman Etheridge is back home and the person he is in Washington are two different people,” she responds.

“He votes with Barack Obama 97 percent of the time, and that is not what the district wants.”

Asked what affect the recently passed healthcare reform bill will have on the country, Ellmers declares: “It’s going to be devastating. It will be devastating to healthcare. The thing that they have put in place will alter our healthcare system completely. We have the best healthcare system in the world. We need to keep it that way. Legislation that is going to make it worse is not the answer.

“But as far as the economy goes, it is going to hurt small businesses. It is going to shut down small businesses, and we are going to lose more jobs.

“I am completely against the Obama healthcare program, and I will do everything possible to defund, dismantle, repeal, and replace it with free market solutions for healthcare reform.”

The Club for Growth released their 2009 scorecard measuring fiscal responsibility among lawmakers, and Etheridge received a score of only 6 percent. Things would be different with Ellmers in his seat, she tells Newsmax.

“I am a fiscal conservative and I believe the way we need to start creating some jobs is through tax cuts and cutting the size of government.

“Government is out of control. Washington is out of control, and Congressman Etheridge is out of control. When he comes home to his district he talks as if he is a fiscally conservative Democrat, and yet votes very liberally.”

Etheridge voted for healthcare reform, cap and trade, and the stimulus package, Ellmers notes, adding: “I would have voted no on all of those things.

But she would vote in favor of extending the Bush tax cuts.

“Right now small businesses and individuals, families, they’re holding it together. If those Bush tax cuts aren’t extended, we are going to see an absolutely devastating situation in our economy.”

Ellmers also says she totally disagrees with a judge’s decision to grant a preliminary injunction against the most controversial aspects of Arizona’s new immigration law. She had reached out to Etheridge, a member of the Ways and Means Committee, to defund the Justice Department’s lawsuit against the Arizona law.

“It’s just ridiculous,” she says.

“The citizens of Arizona are having a problem with crime. The citizens of Arizona are having to deal with this. The federal government refuses to deal with the border situation there and Governor Jan Brewer took it upon herself, and I applaud her. She is the leader we need in this situation.”
