Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has taken another shot at Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp., this time over the company’s purchase of the Wall Street Journal.
“I am not interested in seeing Rupert Murdoch own every newspaper in America,” Edwards said during a campaign stop in New Hampshire.
He said media consolidation was “very damaging” to American democracy and results in a “distorted view” of events, the Boston Globe reported.
Edwards has led efforts to stop Murdoch’s Fox News Channel from hosting Democratic debates. In March he announced that he would not participate in an August debate co-hosted by Fox News and the Nevada Democratic Party. His campaign cited the participation of the right-leaning news organization as a reason for snubbing the debate, which was eventually canceled.
Then in April, Edwards said he would forgo a September debate co-hosted by Fox News and the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute. Fellow Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton followed his lead and also announced they would not participate.
