Clinton: Nations Suppress Internet at Own Risk

Monday, 14 February 2011 11:15 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is warning repressive states in the Middle East and elsewhere that curbs on Internet freedom will not hold back growing popular demands for reforms seen recently in Tunisia and Egypt.

In a major policy address to be delivered on Tuesday, Clinton will say there is no "app" for ending online repression but will pledge U.S. support for cyber dissidents trying to promote democracy. She'll say that regimes that clamp down on Internet usage may be able to withstand calls for change in the short-term, but not forever.

According to excerpts of her speech released by the State Department, she will also challenge countries to allow Internet freedom to flourish for the social, political and economic well-being of their people.
