DAmato to Dump Fred, Back McCain

By    |   Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:27 AM EST

Former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, Fred Thompson’s top supporter in New York, is set to change horses and back John McCain for president instead, according to a report in the New York Post.

D’Amato endorsed Thompson last fall as an alternative GOP candidate to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a longtime political foe of D’Amato.

“Alfonse realizes that Thompson has no chance and may be getting out of the race so he’s decided to endorse his old friend John McCain,” a source close to D’Amato told the Post.

D’Amato’s endorsement of McCain could come as early as Tuesday. D’Amato is returning to New York from Florida, and McCain has scheduled a campaign event in New York on Tuesday.
