Sen. Charles Grassley, Iowa Republican, asked the Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday to look into an academic paper’s allegation that the cash-poor communist government is reaping hard currency by scamming Medicare.
The fraud claim comes from a report published in January by a Cuba studies researcher at the University of Miami. Last month, HHS said seven of its top 10 healthcare fraud fugitives have Cuban backgrounds and six of those have likely fled to the embargoed island nation.
The research paper, paraphrasing a “high-level former intelligence official with the Cuban government,” says where the regime isn’t actively running Medicare scams it’s taking money from healthcare fraud fugitives in exchange for shelter.
