Couric Mocks Palin's 'Gotcha Journalism' Moment

By    |   Tuesday, 07 October 2008 04:48 PM EDT

CBS News anchor Katie Couric, caught on video walking in Manhattan, spared a few moments to return fire after Sarah Palin accused her of "gotcha" journalism.

Asked what newspapers and magazines she read, Couric jokingly told TMZ.com, “all of them and any of them.” Couric avoided the question of whether she was mocking the Republican vice presidential candidate: “I don’t know. I really don’t.”

TMZ, a tabloid-like online entertainment site, referred to its ambush of “Katie High Horse” as “finely timed 'gotcha' journalism.”

Couric apparently was responding to Palin’s comments about her recent multi-part interview of the vice presidential candidate on CBS. Palin was widely mocked by critics and comedians for her confusing, sometimes inarticulate answers on political and economic policy. She could not name a single publication she read when asked by Couric, but said “all of them and any of them.”

In a later interview with Fox News, Palin said she read The Economist and The New York Times, and referred to U.S. Supreme Court decisions she could not reference in speaking with Couric.

“Honestly, the Sarah Palin in those interviews is annoyed,” the Alaska governor said. “No matter what you say, you will get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to pivot and go to another subject you think Americans want to share about, you get clobbered for that, too. But in those… interviews I felt a lot of things that she was missing in terms of an opportunity to ask what a vice presidential candidate stands for, what values are represented.”

Palin went on to say that what she really wanted to talk about was how Democratic nominee Barack Obama would raise taxes, kill jobs, increase government spending and mishandle Iraq.

"I want to talk about things like that,” she said. “So I have to apologize for being a bit annoyed, but is that also an indication of being outside the media … elite. I wanted to talk to Americans without the filter.”

Meanwhile, Couric stood by her reading choices.

“Everyone lies about The Economist, but I actually read it,’’ she said, referring to the weekly British magazine known for its encyclopedic scope of politics and policy.

“I read a lot of magazines and newspapers,” Couric said. “Luckily, I’m not running for vice president.”
