Roberts: Judiciary Has Suffered a Terrible Loss

Saturday, 08 January 2011 07:10 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chief Justice John Roberts says the shooting in Arizona that killed five was senseless and inflicted "tragic loss on dedicated public servants and their families."

He said Saturday that the judiciary has suffered the terrible loss of "one of our own," referring to federal Judge John Roll. "Roberts said Roll selflessly served Arizona and the nation with great distinction, as attorney and judge, for more than 35 years."

Roberts expressed his deepest condolences to his family, as well as the other victims and their families. He said the judge's death is "a somber reminder of the importance of the rule of law and the sacrifices of those who work to secure it."
