Hillary Clinton has amassed a campaign kitty of $3.1 million and is paying eight political employees, despite insisting that she has no plans to run for office.
At the end of her presidential bid last year, the talk was of her $22 million campaign debt, though much of that was owed to herself. But now the presidential campaign has $1 million of cash, and Clinton’s old Senate campaign holds $2.1 million, the New York Daily News reports.
The paper obtained the figures from federal fund-raising records.
In addition, Clinton’s presidential web site still accepts contributions to “help retire Hillary’s campaign debt.”
Clinton also doled out almost $100,000 to eight political staffers in the second quarter this year, the Daily News reports.
To be sure, one of the remaining campaign workers told the paper that the staff intends to spend the presidential campaign money through donations to other candidates or charity.
The aide also said that the eight-person group’s sole task is to finish up what amounted to a $250 million business, and the staff will soon be sliced to five.
The worker pointed out that John Kerry didn’t end his 2004 campaign operations until more than three years after his defeat.
Since becoming Secretary of State in January, Clinton has denied interest in running for anything.
She told ABC News Sunday, "I'm out of politics." But the comments haven’t ruled out a campaign in the future.
And the big financial war chest doesn’t exactly quash speculation.
"It raises questions about that nascent presidential campaign for 2016, and she didn't close the door on that, if you read her remarks carefully," University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato tells the Daily News.
"Just having the committee and the money gives her political clout, if she ever needs it."
A Los Angeles Times blog, “Top of The Ticket,” raises another suspicion:
“There's probably no connection. So many things have changed. But as The Ticket reported here 54 weeks ago, business friends of Hillary Rodham Clinton have purchased the web domain name HRC2012. Hmmm.”
