Chris Matthews: Obama Has Been Too Elitist

Tuesday, 02 Nov 2010 03:03 PM

President Barack Obama strode into the White House in 2008 with an air of invincibility, but in less than two years he’s managed to disappoint his staunchest supporters, including MSNBC host Chris Matthews, who said Monday on MSNBC'S "Andrea Mitchell Reports" that he is disenchanted with Obama's empty promises of patriotism and inclusiveness. "When he was a campaigner, he did nothing but talk about what a great country this is," Matthews said of Obama's historic bid to become president.

“He was very patriotic, very inclusive. He also was very interactive in an interesting way. [But] ever since he's been president, he's been elitist. He's come with his teleprompter and he's given his speech, but he hasn't listened. He's talked at us rather than with us. He hasn't explained himself."

Story continues below.

Matthews noted President Abraham Lincoln had to explain the Civil War to the American people, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt the Great Depression. So why is Obama having difficulty communicating his policies to the nation? His answer: Obama should try selling his policies better by speaking frankly to voters about the nation’s woes.

"You have to take people along with you," Matthews said, adding, “If you're going to spend a $1.6 trillion deficit in one year, you better explain to the American people why you did it. You have to run a big deficit during a grand recession. How about explaining that?

"How about explaining what you are doing in terms of healthcare, and how that's going to help us become a better economy in the long run. It will be painful in the short run politically,” Matthews conceded, “but economically it will give us something that we can base our lives on: guaranteed healthcare. [Obama] never sold it as an economic tool –– a catalyst to greater growth down the road. Maybe it isn't, but he ought to sell it that way.”
