Cain's Wife Breaks Silence, Defends Him

Herman Cain’s wife has finally come to his defense more than two weeks after allegations that he harassed female employees came to light.

Gloria Cain told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren she does not believe her husband’s accusers because he could not have kept that side of him a secret from her throughout their 43-year marriage.

“I don’t think I’m that simple that I would miss something that significant,” she said on Van Susteren’s show, “On the Record.”

She said being married to Herman Cain had been “exhausting,” and the whole harassment episode has made her realize how much she dislikes the political process.

“It made me realize that you can live your whole life trying to be respectful, trying to be faithful, trying to have faith, trying to treat people right, and anyone can come from any place and say whatever they want to say about you. The problem with that is there are people who will believe that person over you.

“If it can happen to us, it can happen to anyone, and that’s sad,” she said.
“People don’t realize that when they throw mud on Herman…they’re throwing mud on the wife, you’re throwing mud on the children, and we all have to endure what you’re doing.”

Mrs. Cain said her husband had told her a story was likely to emerge about allegations of harassment. “I’m thinking, well it’s just hearsay,” she said.
But as it snowballed she pulled her husband aside and asked him, “Do you remember any of these people? Do you remember anything happening that was considered sexual harassment. He kept saying no.”

She said she particularly did not believe the accusations of Sharon Bialek, the only woman to come forward and publicly talk about her alleged experience with the former head of the National Restaurant Association.

“Now, that one I totally don’t believe,” she said. “I watched her on the news that day because I wanted to hear her specific allegations. And the things that she was saying I’m sitting here thinking, You weren’t in the car with Herman.
“He would have to have a split personality to do the things that she said,” the mother-of-two said.

“I don’t know where you have been, but I know Herman Cain and I know he has always had too much respect for women to treat them in any type of negative way. That wasn’t a part of his being.”

Gloria Cain admitted there had been rough spots in their marriage. “When people say ‘I’ve been happily married for 43 years,’ I usually tell them that’s not true.

“We have loved each other for 43 years. He’s happy sometimes. I’m happy sometimes. The times when he makes me angry, I’ll go to another room. The times when I make him angry, he’ll go to another room.

“So we have times when we don’t agree but we eventually talk about what the situation is. At that point we still may not agree, but we leave it alone.”

Cain, who has stayed out of the limelight as her husband’s political star has risen, admitted she was “very nervous” about the interview, which aired on Monday night. She has never been known to sit down with any reporter previously, on camera or off.

Herman Cain joined his wife at the tail end of the interview when the couple talked about how he had pursued her for a year before she would agree to go on a date with him. They went to see a Charlton Heston movie.

Van Susteren asked him if he put his arm around her in the cinema. “Maybe once or twice,” he replied. “I didn’t try to get fresh, not on the first date.”
