Bradley Prize for Kristol, Harberger, Gilbert

Tuesday, 05 May 2009 08:28 PM EDT

The founders of the Federal Society and The Weekly Standard news magazine are among the winners who will be honored this year with prestigious Bradley Awards, according to the The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.

Founded in 1985, The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation is devoted to strengthening American democratic capitalism and the institutions, principles and values that sustain and nurture it. It supports limited, competent government; a dynamic marketplace for economic, cultural activity; and a vigorous defense, at home and abroad, of American ideas and institutions.

The four winners this year of its annual award are:

  • Arnold C. “Alito” Harberger. He currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Economics at UCLA. He is also the Gustavus F. and Ann M. Swift Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, where he taught from 1953 to 1991. “Professor Harberger has advanced economic policies that have aided developing nations throughout the world. In particular, he has trained Latin American economists who have instituted important market reforms in their respective countries.”

  • The Federalist Society, which was founded in 1982 by the Honorable Spencer Abraham, Professor Steven G. Calabresi, the Honorable David McIntosh and the Honorable Lee Liberman Otis while they were law students. Under the leadership of President Eugene B. Meyer and Executive Vice President Leonard Leo, the Society has since expanded into a nationally prominent legal institution. “The Bradley Foundation selected the founders and leaders of the Federalist Society for their ingenuity in forming and nurturing an organization dedicated to preserving rule of law,” said Michael W. Grebe, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bradley Foundation. “The Federalist Society has become a vital resource in American legal education.”

  • William Kristol, founding editor of The Weekly Standard, a FOX News contributor, and chairman of National Affairs, Inc. Kristol served as Chief of Staff to Vice President Dan Quayle and Education Secretary William Bennett and led the Project for the Republican Future, which helped shape the strategy for the Republican victory in the 1994 congressional elections.

  • Sir Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill and one of the world’s most distinguished historians of modern times. “Sir Martin Gilbert’s seminal work in history has been widely acclaimed, and his work is considered the standard in its field.”
