Aides to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg have been asking consultants from his past campaigns whether they would be available if he decides to make a White House bid in 2008.
The aides believe Bloomberg will wait to see who the likely nominees are before making a decision about an independent presidential run, according to a report in the New York Post.
One New York political activist who worked on Bloomberg’s last campaign and had been planning on joining Hillary Clinton’s campaign team was told by the major’s advisers not to enlist with Clinton and instead wait to see what Bloomberg decides.
Bloomberg has insisted that he has “no plans” to run for president, but he has allowed Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey to explore the possibility, the Post reports.
Sheekey has said that Bloomberg doesn’t have to make a decision before March 5, the day after the Texas primaries and the first date that nominating petitions for an independent candidate can be circulated in the state.
