McChrystal Says He Resigned for Good of Mission

Wednesday, 23 June 2010 02:27 PM EDT

Gen. Stanley McChrystal says he tendered his resignation out of his desire to see the mission in Afghanistan succeed.

McChrystal issued his statement Wednesday night from NATO headquarters in Kabul just minutes after President Barack Obama announced that he was dismissing the top commander in Afghanistan.

McChrystal says he strongly supports Obama's strategy and remains deeply committed to the coalition forces, partner nations and the Afghan people and — in his words — had a "desire to see the mission succeed."
