NOT-SO-FUNNY COMEDIAN
Fake News comes in many forms. One kind is the media choosing their attack targets by who the person is and not by what he/she does. If they like you, don’t worry you are safe; if you support the wrong side then beware.
For example take Bill Maher, the funny (?) man who is a darling of the left. The other day on his HBO show "Real Time" he made some comments that were so insensitive and cruel that they should have enraged most Americans — even liberal journalists. He said: “I feel like the bottom has to fall out (of the economy) at some point.” He certainly is entitled to his opinions about the economy. OK … so far.
Then came the bombshell. “… I’m HOPING for it. One way you get rid of Trump is a CRASHING ECONOMY. So please, BRING ON THE RECESSION.” (In fairness the capitalizations are mine.)
Okay, so he is a comedian but is this a joke? Not so funny for millions who would suffer in the recession he desires. Here is a super-rich snob who would continue to live the high life, recession or not. Yet he is saying he wants millions of people to lose their jobs; seniors to lose much of their savings; pension funds to lose money for teachers, police, firemen, and various unions; states, cities, and the whole country to lose tax money that is needed for everything from education to repairing bridges. That is what this “gentleman” says he wants. All merely to take votes away from our sitting president.
It would sow misery, bankruptcy, and even hunger across our great nation. Yet this comic thinks it is worth it just to wound Donald Trump. Is this the new modern comedy or just an expression of pure hate? You judge.
Some joke; some comedian.
Now did you see the expected outcry from journalists at NBC, CBS, ABC, plus the Times and Washington Post? I must have missed it.
Now imagine if a conservative comedian had said he wanted to create havoc and sorrow among millions because it might rid us of Obama. Don’t you think it would have caused an uproar on TV with liberal Senators and commentators calling for the comic’s head?
This is the sad truth about the skewed “news” and commentary we are served every day.
ANOTHER NUTTY CELEBRITY
Sunday night at the Tony Awards where brilliant but fading actor Robert De Niro was addressing the elite Broadway crowd on TV. His words: “First I wanna say f*** Trump. It’s no longer Down With Trump, it’s f*** Trump.”
Of course these words and other similar obscenities were bleeped out by the network but cheered by the crowd — who perhaps were mainly steelworkers, farmers, and coal miners.
This was pretty raw and probably offensive to most Americans but if TV says it is okay who am I to disagree with free speech?
But Mr. De Niro needs to research the meaning of his F-word. The good old Anglo Saxon F-word for centuries has meant to have sexual relations of the baby-making kind. I imagine Mr. De Niro knows this so I have a question for him. Were his remarks aimed at ladies, encouraging them to live out their fantasies with the president? Or does Mr. De Niro have a secret passion for Donald and is suggesting a little get together in the Lincoln bedroom?
If neither, then “Bobby” might want to find other, more accurate and appropriate language.
SQUEEZING OUT MATH AND SCIENCE (NY Times)
What should High Schools be teaching our kids? Well not too much science and math, if you believe a recent story in the Times.
In an interesting — and lengthy — story by Alina Tugend, she told Times and millions of other syndicated readers that a high school in Mamaroneck, NY, was beginning a new four-year course named Original Civic Research and Action which would teach students about civics and government. Who could argue with the wisdom of that?
However, the reporter mentioned that this course was based on similar courses, including math, at the school and wrote: “… the increased focus on science and mathematics, as well as standardized tests, has squeezed out time that once would have been devoted to such (Civics) courses.”
In other words, it seems to be the opinion of the Times story that courses for civics, drama and probably — in many schools — bullying and safe driving are appropriate for our students…. even if they lessen class time for science, math, English and basic education necessities. Chose good stuff at the expense of vital stuff.
Today’s journalists are prejudiced towards politically correct viewpoints and sometimes they are also lazy. So why didn’t the reporter find out how much time this new course would take and what classes would be compressed and by how much. She was obviously gung-ho for the classes without really understanding the side effects of cutting class time elsewhere.
No wonder American education is rated so low among the list of industrialized nations. Surely the obvious main focus of our education system should be given to allotting teaching time to reading, writing, math, science, and a few others. The rest of the time should be rationed among other important, but less vital, subjects. There is no time for them all.
All of these courses are laudable and educators are correct in considering new things. But they have to be prioritized. More and more of our teachers are being asked to perform tasks that used to be the duty of parents.
Perhaps the Mamaroneck School did indeed make time for the new course by trimming other, less vital, courses. If the reporter had done her job efficiently, we would know the answer. Maybe she will go back and ask the missing questions!
P.S.: The teacher who had the Civics brainstorm told the reporter that the election of President Trump gave the program more “urgency.” Guess what the political spin of the Civics teachers is likely to be?
