What Is Your Body Acid Status?

If you drink a significant amount of carbonated drinks, odds are your body will have a low pH level, indicating that it is in an acidic state.

In chemistry, pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is. The scale goes from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral (water). A pH of lower than 7 is acidic, and the lower the number, the more acidic a substance, even the human body, is.

Alkaline states begin at a pH above 7. In terms of health, it is best to keep the body at a pH of around 11.

Why is the pH of your body important? We are learning through a resurgence of medical data that people with an alkaline pH have a less incidence of disease, less fat accumulation, and enjoy other significant benefits.

The reason that I mention carbonated drinks is that the carbonation process makes them very acidic, thus helping put the body in an acid state. Even drinking carbonated diet drinks is a no-no if you are trying to lose weight because the acidic state allows accumulation of fat, particularly in the belly. Even plain carbonated water is not acceptable if you want to maintain a healthy pH level.

In an acidic state, the body does not use oxygen as well as it does when the body is in an alkaline state. This factor is the reason that there is an increased incidence of malignancy in those with a low body pH.

Recent he data on cancer formation indicates that malignancies operate in a hypoxic, or oxygen-deficient, state. Therefore, an acidic body state stimulates the development of cancer.

There are other benefits to an alkaline pH. For instance, when patients with diabetes drink alkaline water, they are usually able to significantly cut their insulin requirement, and also tend to lose weight.

There are a number of products on the market that can make water more alkaline. The unit that I have is called a Kangen Water Unit. You can find it at www.wateriskey.com.

The best way to check your pH is to look at your most recent urinalysis, because it usually will provide the body pH. An alternative is to go to a drugstore and buy litmus paper that you can put under your tongue and measure your own pH.

It is interesting to me to see the change in the concept of the importance of the body’s acidity. As a child, my father, who was a physician, had us drink alkaline water, which was popular at that time. Then the trend kind of went by.
Now, however, there is significant medical data that supports the advantage of keeping your body in an alkaline pH.
