Best-Kept Medical Secret: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Jun 2014 10:47 AM

In my opinion, the value of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the best-kept medical secret in our country.

Few Americans know how effective it can be in treating a wide range of debilitating conditions. As a result, it remains underutilized.

Those of us in the United States tend to think that we are the leaders in medical care. However, this is clearly not true in the area of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

Here in the U.S. we have only 17 approved indications for HBOT. In other countries, including Russia, HBOT is used to treat as many as 74 conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and multiple sclerosis.

HBOT can bring stunning improvement to some patients. For example, a severe stroke at age 31 left Valerie Greene without the ability to walk or talk. Today, with the help of HBOT, she communicates well and has left her wheelchair behind. She tells her story at www.bcenter.com.

I have had excellent results treating MS patients with HBOT, allowing some to remain symptom-free for 30 years. Here's a link to the top 10 leading U.S. treatment centers for MS.

Cancer care is another area where I have used hyperbaric oxygen therapy with excellent response, both to treat the complications of radiation treatment and chemotherapy.

I had a patient who had “chemo brain,” cognitive symptoms resulting from chemotherapy. The condition had caused the patient to be unable to work and she had been on disability for 6 years. However, with 20 hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments, the patient returned to work full-time.

We have also used hyperbaric oxygen to improve the results of other treatments such as radiation therapy. For example, I have a patient who had synovial cell sarcoma of the chest wall and was given only a 5 percent chance to live five years. Now, more than 25 years later, she is doing quite well and has had no other problems.

Here’s how you can find out more about hyperbaric oxygen therapy:
