Root vegetables are the unsung heroes of the nutrition world. We hear a lot about the power of greens, but we need more roots in our diets.

Roots are very warming to the body because they are loaded with minerals and antioxidants. Many of my favorite herbs, which I use daily, are roots.

Let’s explore some of my favorites.

Beets
This root, with its deep dark red purple color, has a powerful effect on rebuild blood and supporting your cardiovascular system.

Beets are very high in iron and are great for people who suffer from anemia. They can also help lower your blood pressure.

Finally, beets are high in methyl groups like betaine a substance that helps support your detoxification pathways.

Turmeric
With its deep yellow-orange color, this root has been shown to be antiviral, anticancer, and antibiotic, and to aid in healing the skin.

Turmeric contains a powerful phytochemical called curcumin, which has been shown to help the immune system and protect the brain.

Turmeric helps slow down the again process, and in high doses works as an anti-depressant.

He Shou Wu (Fo Ti)
This is a root from traditional Chinese medicine that helps restore kidney function and helps your hair from gray to its original color.

Fo ti is a kidney tonic herb. In Chinese medicine the kidneys are the battery packs of the body. If you are weak, low in energy, low libido, or diabetic conditions this herb can work wonders. It helps to strengthen the body fortify the muscles and calm your central nervous system.
Fo ti is another great source of iron making it great for any anemic condition.

Yams
Yams are delicious powerhouses of nutrition, with vitamin c, b vitamins, iron, calcium, and many other antioxidants that help support the whole body.

Yams also contain allatonin, a phytochemical that has been shown to help speed up healing of the skin. They also support the body’s production of hormones.
