Americans went through their two most stressful days in nearly nine years this Election Day and the day after, a new poll shows.

According to a Gallup survey released Wednesday, 19 percent of adults were classified as being in a bad mood Nov. 8 – defined by the pollster as having a lot of stress or worry without a lot of happiness and enjoyment. The number notched up to 20 percent Nov. 9.

Stress levels had reached 19 percent or higher only three times in nearly nine years – and were well above the daily average of 11 percent, Gallup reported.

The telephone poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

"Americans' mood soured on Election Day, something that typically has happened in election years," the pollster's analysis stated. "But the drop in mood was significantly worse this Election Day than in previous presidential election years.

"If previous patterns hold true, Americans' mood should fully recover this week as many gather for Thanksgiving. Previous research shows that Americans' happiest days of the year fall on holidays."
