An insurance company sued by actress Shannen Doherty over home damages said she is using her recent stage 4 cancer diagnosis for sympathy so that she can get a payout on a claim.

The former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star opened up about her struggle with the disease in an interview with "Good Morning America" earlier this month. She revealed that her breast cancer had progressed to stage 4 after being in remission for three years.

Insurance company State Farm said last week that Doherty was using her diagnosis to "garner sympathy" in the legal battle it is facing regarding a dispute of how much the insurance company should pay for repairs to the actress's home, which was damaged in the devastating California fires of 2018.

State Farm says it has already paid what is owed on the claim.

Doherty's lawyer Devin McRae criticized State Farm for alleging that his client was trying to use her health to "garner sympathy."

"Shannen's health is not only relevant [to the case], but also the amount of time State Farm is taking from her," he told USA Today. "She is dying. Her life is finite right now. So the fact that they're taking her time right now is just as egregious."

Doherty's lawyers stated in court documents obtained by USA Today that she "is dying of stage 4 terminal cancer" but "instead of living out her remaining years peacefully in her home, Ms. Doherty remains displaced and battling with her insurance company."

State Farm responded to the claims in a legal document that "reveals [the] plaintiff's plan at trial to garner sympathy by her contention that State Farm must rebuild her entire house" because she has breast cancer.

In a statement, State Farm spokesperson Sevag Sarkissian said the company was prepared to defend its position in court.

"We empathize with Ms. Doherty's heath issues and wish her a full recovery," Sarkissian said. "We strongly believe we have upheld our commitment to our customer and have paid what we owe on this claim. We are prepared to defend our position in court."
