Actress Shannen Doherty has revealed that she has stage 4 breast cancer. She was first diagnosed with the disease in 2015 but went into remission three years ago. Now the former “Beverly Hills 90210” star is opening up about her struggles.
"So my cancer came back," Doherty told Good Morning America in an interview aired Tuesday.
The 48-year-old actress said it was inevitable that the news was going to get out. She wanted to be the first to share it, even if she could not put on the brave face that she has been wearing for the last five years.
"I don't think I've processed it. It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways," Doherty continued.
"I definitely have days where I say, why me?. And then I go, well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this? None of us do."
Since her diagnosis, Doherty has been open about her cancer and has shared much of her journey with her fans via social media, but this time around she kept the news private so that she could continue working on the "90210" reboot.
She said she wanted to prove that people with stage four cancer could still work and live normal lives.
"Like, you know, our life doesn't end the minute we get that diagnosis. We still have some living to do," she said.
There were just a handful of people Doherty trusted to tell about her cancer. Among them was "90210" co-star Brian Austin Green, who was a pillar of support during filming.
"I had moments of great anxiety where I thought, 'I can't really do this,'" she said.
Green would regularly check in to see how she was feeling and dole out the pep talks.
"So prior to shooting he would always call me and say, 'Listen, you know, whatever happens, I have your back.' He would look at me and be like, 'We got this, kiddo,'" Doherty continued. "Brian helped me through a lot."
