A self-employed Queens native who won a $1 million lottery jackpot died weeks later from cancer, and was at the doctor’s office for a long-overdue checkup when he got the diagnosis, according to a news report.

Before winning the lottery, Donald Savastano, 51, had trouble pay for the doctor’s visit, and was looking forward to finally getting to the bottom of the back pain he was having, according to his mom, Annette Savastano, the New York Post reports.

After winning the lotto, and finally getting the money to see a physician, Savastano and his family learned the news — he had stage 4 cancer, and just a few weeks to live.

“It was terrible,” Annette said.

Her son went from being on cloud nine — after collecting his “Merry Millionaire” scratch-off winnings — to finding out he was going to die in a matter of days.

“It was too late,” Annette said of her son’s diagnosis. “It was just too late. He was very, very, very sick.”

Last Friday, Savastano succumbed to the illness.

“I was hoping the money would save his life, that he could afford to get the best treatment,” explained Danielle Scott, the convenience store worker who sold Savastano the winning ticket.

“He [didn’t] have insurance, he was self-employed,” she told The Post. “It was right before Christmas so I was thinking, ‘God, I know this guy could use this.’”
