FOX News Anchor Reveals Son's Heart Battle

Thursday, 29 May 2014 03:02 PM

Fox News anchor Bret Baier has published a new book detailing his family's challenges in coping with his son Paul's struggles with heart disease.

Bret and Amy Baier's first child, born in 2007, was diagnosed with five congenital heart defects shortly after his birth, Fox News reports.

In his new book, "Special Heart: A Journey of Faith, Hope, Courage and Love," Baier chronicles the family's struggle with Paul's condition and includes correspondences between the Baier family and their friends and relatives.

Baier said he hopes the book will help other families facing similar obstacles to cope. He added that as Paul continues to grow older, the family hopes that he will be empowered — not hindered — by his experiences. Although he may require additional procedures, the Baiers said they are confident he will lead a long, healthy life.

Just one day after their son Paul was born, the Baiers were informed of his condition and doctors said he would need numerous open heart surgeries. There was no guarantee he would ever be able to go home.

"It was like a bomb went off in the room," Bret Baier said. "And I remember all of those things, that moment, changing our lives. Because [the doctor] essentially said if he didn't have surgery within days, he would die."

Added Amy: "It was really our worst nightmare, it really ... took the wind out of our sail …It was absolutely heartbreaking."

Fortunately, the medical procedures Paul Underwent were successful and he is now an energetic, healthy 6-year-old who enjoys playing with his younger brother, Daniel, the Baiers noted.

Baier said the proceeds from his will be donated to various non-profit pediatric heart causes.
