Vaginitis: Symptoms and Treatments

Thursday, 10 April 2014 12:46 AM

Vaginitis is a condition of inflammation of the vagina or vulva. Causes of vaginitis include bacterial or yeast infection. Apart from bacteria or fungi, parasitic organisms called trichomonas may also cause this condition. There may even be some non-infectious causes. While sexually transmitted diseases may be among the infectious causes, a physical or chemical irritation of the vagina may also be a reason for vaginitis. Pregnant women should take extra precautions as the condition can also affect the fetus.

Vaginitis Symptoms
Symptoms of vaginitis include burning, pain, and itchiness. Irritation can also be among the associated symptoms. Other common symptoms include vaginal discharge, especially a foul-smelling one. Some patients of vaginitis do not experience any symptoms, but some common symptoms are listed below:
  • Vaginal pain or discomfort
  • Pain during urination
  • Itching
  • Malodorous discharge
  • Pain during sex
Treatments and Remedies of Vaginitis
Treatments depend upon the kind of infection causing the vaginitis. If the vaginitis is caused by a bacterial infection, it can be treated using antibiotic treatments. These antibiotic treatments help clear the harmful bacteria while leaving the good bacterial cultures intact. Over-the-counter medicines are not recommended as treatments for bacterial infection.
Topical creams or medicines are used as treatments in the case of a yeast infection. Doctors can advise and prescribe the proper treatments of vaginitis after checking the symptoms to identify the causative agents. Medicines used as treatments for yeast infections are not useful as treatments of symptoms associated with other infections.
Some natural treatments and remedies are listed as follows:
  • White vinegar: This is one of the home remedies helpful for vaginitis patients. Add one to two tablespoons of white vinegar to a pint of water. Using this as a daily douche for seven days is among effective remedies for treating associated symptoms.
  • Tea tree oil: It is one of the useful remedies for treating symptoms of vaginal infection. Insertion of a suppository containing tea tree oil or external application of this oil can be among the beneficial remedies.
  • Herbal mixture: Herbs can be used as remedies for vaginitis. Take oregano leaf, coneflower, and goldenseal root in equal proportions. Mix a teaspoon of this in a pint of water. Douching with this solution for four to 10 days is among effective remedies for preventing vaginal infection.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: These are natural remedies helpful for patients of vaginal infection. One teaspoon of the oil taken two to three times is one of the effective remedies for the skin. Or, use one to two capsules for ease of use.
  • Boric acid: It is among the natural remedies useful for treating vaginal infection. Vaginal insertion of one capsule of boric acid daily for seven days is recommended.
  • Iodine: Add one part iodine to 100 parts water. Douching with this solution twice daily for 10 to 14 days is among beneficial remedies.
