Tampons Recalled Over Bacterial Contamination

Tuesday, 15 November 2011 10:59 AM EST

About 1,400 cases of Kotex tampons are being recalled due to possible bacterial contamination, according to company representatives.

The recall is limited to Kotex Natural Balance Security Unscented Tampons Regular Absorbency, 18 and 36-count boxes shipped between October 29 and November 2. The tampons were distributed to Walmart stores in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas; to Fry's stores in Arizona; and to Smith's stores in Utah and Arizona.

Tests found the bacterium Enterobacter sakazakii on a single plastic tube, according to Bob Brand, spokesman for the Dallas-based Kimberly-Clark corporation. An unidentified third party makes the tubes, says Brand, but "this is our responsibility."

The bacteria can cause vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, and other, potentially life-threatening infections.
There have been no reports of illness associated with the product, Brand said.

Symptoms of possible infection include vaginal discharge, headache, rash, fever, vomiting or abdominal pains. Those at higher risk for infection are women with existing health problems, cancer, HIV and those with weakened immune systems.

Consumers who have used these products and are experiencing symptoms should immediately see a doctor. Consumers may also contact Kimberly-Clark at 1-800-335-6839.
