Whole Foods Recalls Tainted Cheese

By    |   Monday, 08 July 2013 03:07 PM EDT

Whole Foods Market has recalled cheese products sold by Crave Brothers Les Frères in response to a recall by the Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese Company of Waterloo, Wisc.

The cheese is being recalled because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals can also experience high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea as a result of Listeria infection. But the microbe can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. To date, one illness and one death have been reported.

Regulators are investigating the potential health risks associated with the products and Crave Brothers has recalled them as a result.

The Les Frères cheese products in question are packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold nationwide with Whole Foods Market scale labels and the PLU codes 299682 and 294473.

Customers who purchased the product from Whole Foods Market should discard it and bring in their receipt for a full refund. Consumers can also call 512-477-5566, ext. 20060, on contact Crave Brothers directly at 920-478-4887.
