Stress Turns Women Off

Memo to stressed-out single men: Women may be able to read your stress level in your facial expressions – and it’s not a turn on.

New research, published in the journal Nature Communications, has found levels of the stress hormone cortisol can change a man’s facial features in ways a woman can read. Researchers also found women respond more positively to men with masculine features tied to high testosterone levels and stronger immune systems.

Researchers from the University in Dundee, Scotland, asked nearly 100 female college students in Latvia to rate the attractiveness of 74 male students – on a scale of 1 to 0 -- based on their photographs. The men in the photos were also tested for their testosterone and cortisol levels and their immune-system function using a standard measurement of antibody response.
What the study found: Women tended to rate the men with the strongest immune systems – and high testosterone levels – better looking. Those with high cortisol levels tended to score lower. Researchers said this suggests women may have an intuitive sense for men who would make good mates.
“Here we show positive relationships between testosterone, facial attractiveness and immune function …in human males, and present some preliminary evidence that these relationships are moderated by naturally co-occurring cortisol,” they said. “We conclude that our results provide support for a role of [stress hormones] in hormonally mediated sexual selection.”
